ETWA Event - Independent Filmmaking in East Timor

INDEPENDENT FILM MAKING EAST TIMOR

Heru Ini Lafu: Weaving Life
Weaving Life is a unique film that journeys into rural East Timor to show a side of life rarely seen on Australian screen. The film highlights the women’s involvement in the resistance movement and celebrates their critical role in cultural regeneration and national development through weaving tais the traditional cloth of east Timor.

Atu Buka Mehi: In Search of a Dream
In Search of a Dream is a touching film detailing the plight of an East Timorese youth soccer team with big dreams of making it to the 2004 Asia Cup. This film beautifully captures a love of the world game and the determination of the youth of a new nation with the heartfelt belief that it can be done.

East Timor Women Australia, ETWA is a small not for profit community group that supports cultural and economic development in rural East Timor. In 2007 they partnered with Independent film maker Marcus Salvagno to produce “Heru Ini Lafu; Weaving life” a short film about the women ETWA support, their cultural heritage and their role in Timor’s resistance and community reconstruction.

In this special event, ETWA welcomes Marcus Salvagno to screen and discuss these films as well as his other Independent work based in East Timor. This is a rare opportunity to meet with a director who continues to work with community concerns and local capacity building in mind. The evening should be of particular interest to other community groups who are seeking to document their own field of endeavours with lessons learned from working on small budget cross cultural film projects.

DATE: Thursday 30th September 2010
TIME: 6.00PM-8.00PM
VENUE: Ross House, 247 Flinders Lane, Melbourne
Please share invite with your friends.

Food and drinks to share and traditional East Timorese handicrafts for sale on the night.
All proceeds will go towards supporting ETWA’s projects in Timor Leste.

Tutor wanted

Dili Film Works is a new NGO based in Dili East Timor. The focus of the NGO is to teach East Timorese how to become filmmakers. We have received a small amount of funding from the Hubert Bals Fund (Rotterdam Film Festival) to run a drama workshop and from the Jan Vrijman Fund (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) to run a doco course.

We are looking for a tutor to help run the film production courses in Dili. The Tutor will be overseen by a senior lecturer, Luigi Acquisto. It is a volunteer's wage ($500 US a month) plus accommodation and most meals. The job is for 2 - 4 months starting at the end of October. The tutor must speak English but can be from any country.

The courses are preparing a group of talented young East Timorese filmmakers to produce the country’s first feature film in 2011. The film will be co-produced by FairTrade Films Australia and Dili Film Works. Acclaimed producer John Maynard (Romulus My Father, Balibo) will be co-producing the film as well as assisting with the workshops.

Luigi is presently based in Melbourne so could meet up with any interested and suitable candidates. My email details are listed.

Update - friends of Baucau

Thanks to those who came along to our great public meeting back on the 28th July. It was a fabulous turn out despite the rain bucketing down outside. As a follow up from this event and as we move through the transition to becoming a community organisation we will be holding two more community meetings this year - one on 29th September and one on 17th November 2010.

For those that haven't followed these developments or who were unable to make it to the event, the Cities of Yarra and Darebin have made a decision to support the Friends of Baucau to become a sustainable and independent community association. This means that the project officer role will continue until the end of December. Following this the Friends of Baucau incorporated will receive grants ($30,000 per year for two years is allocated in budgets).

Furthermore the two Councils have signalled a desire to continue in friendship with the District of Baucau, and has committed additional funds to developing a new Friendship agreement. The Councils hope to focus on activities that are focused on local government and have committed some additional funds to developing the agreement and determining what type of activities might be suitable.

Things have been busy over the last couple of weeks - Friends of Baucau has engaged an independent consultant, Gabrielle Samson, to undertake a consultation with various stakeholders regarding the Baucau Buka Hatene centre and it's future direction. You may have heard of Gabrielle as she has worked extensively on Atauro Island including with the Tua Ko'in Eco-Village. Gabrielle is in Baucau in present and will be completing her consultancy at the end of the month. If you would like to have any input into this please feel welcome to email me.

News at Friends of Baucau

I am writing to let you know about some important news about the future of the Friends of Baucau.

In May this year Yarra City Council and Darebin City Council passed resolutions to support the transition of the Friends of Baucau to become a sustainable, independent incorporated community association. This transition will take place during the remainder of 2010 and will include some financial support until the end of 2012.

As many of your will be aware, March 2011 is the 10 year anniversary of the signing of the original Friendship Agreement between Darebin and Yarra City Councils and Baucau, Timor-Leste. This change does not mean the end of that Friendship Relationship - Darebin and Yarra City Councils have resolved to enter into discussions with a view to re-sign a Friendship Agreement with the District of Baucau.

Darebin and Yarra will, during the course of the new phase of the Friendship Relationship, focus their relationship on local government activities. This reflects the changing needs at the District Administration in Baucau as Timor-Leste moves towards adopting a system of democratically elected local governments.

The Friendship relationship has achieved much over the course of the past 10 years including our major project - the reconstruction of a building and it's development as the Baucau Buka Hatene ('Baucau Want to Learn") Friendship and Learning Centre (BBH). Friends of Baucau have also been the major source of funding to this centre for programs since BBH opened 6 years ago including:
- English classes
- computer classes (provided by InfoTimor)
- womens' development program
- youth program
- library
- an internet cafe
There is still much to be achieved at BBH and for the Baucau community more generally. We are seeking community members to be a part of the team in creating, driving and growing the new Friends of Baucau.

There will be an opportunity over coming weeks to attend an Information session to find out more about this change and an invitation will be distributed soon.

If you would like to play a role in the future of the Friends of Baucau you can contact Fiona Young on 8470 8332 or email fiona.young@darebin.vic.gov.au to express your interest or find out more about the changes.

Council to extend friendship with Suai for another 10 years
The City of Port Phillip will extend the hand of friendship to Suai, East Timor for another ten years, after council voted to renew its friendship agreement in principle last night.
The original agreement, signed by Xanana Gusmao, President of the National Council of Timorese Resistance (now Prime Minister) in 2000, pledged to help rebuild the country almost totally destroyed by Indonesian forces, after the overwhelming vote for independence in 1999.
“We started this friendship ten years ago and it has evolved and matured into a strong and effective relationship,” said Mayor Frank O’Connor.
“We are both coastal communities but very different and we have learned so much from each other. Local schools have made friendships, as have many other groups and individuals. The adage acting locally and thinking globally really does apply here,” he said.
The renewal of the agreement is due to be signed later this year, following the development of a strategic plan.

About the book:

"Last year's film 'Balibo' re-ignited public awareness of the six Australian journalists murdered in East Timor in 1975. Shirley Shackleton, widow of journalist Greg Shackleton, has now told her side of the story in an engaging, funny, gutsy and often heart-rending memoir. Hers is an extraordinary life: from public relations career-woman to motherhood, and then following the loss of her husband, nearly 35 years of activism." Nicola Robinson, 'Bookseller and Publisher' magazine.
